WASAC Night Visual Identity

In 2019, I had the amazing opportunity to work on a project in partnership with WASAC and TNSE. I was asked to develop and create branding for an event called WASAC Night and Follow Your Dreams Night. This was set to be an ongoing promotional event highlighting Indigenous culture as a part of TSNE's "This is Hockey" initiative.

I drew inspiration from Plains culture for the Jet's branding, in particular, the visual lexicons from both the Dakota and Dene Nations. The logo itself contains the symbols for feather, home and earth that you can often see in quillwork and beadwork. I also wanted to take the cardinal directions and present it in a fresh way that focuses on the idea of the circle and shows the continuity and dynamism of life and how our culture is reflective of that. It's continuing to grow while also maintaining history.

Though the term Indigenous may be a word born out of convenience to describe First Nations, Inuit and Metis people, we are not a monolith, and I wanted to take this opportunity to show that. As mentioned earlier, each tribe has a distinct visual language that expresses their perspective and understanding of the world. It's time for us to break out and explore what makes us distinct so that we can come back together to celebrate each other through our experiences as Indigenous people in Canada.
